Hockey vs Athlone Club & Rugby vs Buccanneers

Yesterday we had our last breakfast at the Belvedere Hotel before making a bus trip to Athlone.  As promised here are some pics as proof that the kids are all being fed and very well at that.  I hope the parents at home know they have to ensure they have a cooked breakfast every morning including cappuccino's!

After a two hour bus trip we arrived in Athlone where the boys and girls had a quick lunch break and then we were off to our separate training sessions.  Again the weather conditions were slightly questionable but the two groups made the most of it and had constructive sessions.

Thereafter the hosts and their families arrived to pick up our children.   Meeting the parents from the players, we knew our children were in very good hands.

Today we started with the girls taking on Athlone Hockey Club, the club in the Irish Midlands with the most girls players.  The game started at pace and we instantly knew that these girls meant business.  They made good leading passes and were able to take our defence by surprise fairly early in the game and scored.  The first half was mostly played in our half and they managed to score another goal making the score 0-2 at half time.

After a strong half time chat, the girls packed it all in and despite the freezing weather played their hearts out and some really strong play from Emma Ratcliff and amazing saves from Unathi Sibeko in goals let us only concede one goal.  We can commend the Athlone Hokey Club on their good play and we certainly learnt a lot from the game.

The boys took on the Buccaneers Rugby Club in Athlone.  A poor start defensively put us down 5 tries to one in the first half of the match.  At half time the coaches addressed certain issues and came out 100% better in the second half.  They managed to score 3 tries and the second half to 1 try of the opposition.  Tries scored by Connor Van Wyk who made a 80m solo run to score a brilliant try.
Cameron Whittington also scored a great individual try with Marick Baronet rounding it off with well worked team try.  The final score was 38-17 to the Buccaneers.

We were pleasantly surprised at the post match function with a visit from Mr Tony Colgan from Marist College here in Athlone.
